Book Club Guidelines

I wanted to put together some loose guidelines - nothing too draconian, I hope!

1) This is not my book club. I just happen to be coordinating it for our children's benefit, and I do not want to make unilateral decisions, or project my personal vision on to this club. I will do my best to inspire discussion at meetings, and bring ideas to the club, and I hope other parents and children will do the same.

2) There can be more than just discussion at the book club. For example, those that are inspired by the book to create a drawing or painting are welcome to bring their art to share and discuss. Or, if some of the children enjoy preparing a dramatic reading of their favorite passage from the book, that would be great, too.

3) This is a no stress, no burden book club. If someone can't come, or doesn't want to come etc., and doesn't show up for that month, that's totally fine.

4) We are currently holding the meetings at La Fontana Caffe. We are lucky to have such a central and convenient location for our meetings. John the owner, is graciously allowing us to use his place. So out of respect for John, please no outside food or drink.

5) If your children have just read an awesome book, that they think everyone else should read, and it's not their turn to make suggestions for the month, they are welcome to send the title to me, and I will post it here for others to see. This way we can create a nice list of recommended reading for anyone that is interested.

We had a pretty decent turnout for our very first meeting. Thank you, everyone for your enthusiasm and participation.

One of our orders of business was to select books for the next two months.

Nicola was chosen to give three choices, for September and of the three, the children selected:

Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles, by Julie Andrews Edwards

Felix offered October's selections, and the children chose:

The Magic Pudding, by Norman Lindsay

Other great books that the children are reading and recommending, include:

The Magician's Nephew (The Chronicles of Narnia #1), by C.S. Lewis

Half Magic, by Edward Eager

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, by J.K. Rowling

Rufus M., by Eleanor Estes
